Essential Gear: Flip Ultra HD Camcorder

flip-ultra-hd-video-camera-13DT recently picked up a Flip Ultra HD Micro Camcorder.  We're impressed by this device for the ease of use, quality video and small footprint - it fits in your pocket! But, seriously, for quick trips, the Ultra HD is perfect.  It holds 2 hours of video and takes AA batteries.  Is it a camcorder replacement?  No.  Would I shoot the next great American blockbuster with it?  No!  But, for simple, quick clips, the camera is a pretty good performer.  Here is a sample video taken on the New York City Waterway ferry, video taken at about 7:30 PM on a cloudy night (click HD for the high def version!): The Ultra HD can connect to a 720P HD television via a mini-HDMI to HDMI connection.  It also has a built in USB port that allows you to easily access all of your videos, saved in compressed h.264 mp4 files.  The included software makes it easy to share with Youtube, email videos or push to a DVD. Who this is perfect for: Users who are interested in getting quick clips, during daylight hours.  Indoor quality is iffy, if the light is low.  If you take less than 2 tapes with you on a trip, then this will work perfectly.  If you travel with a notebook computer, even better - you can download clips each day. Who wouldn't like it: Video enthusiasts.  The quality is decent but the zoom capabilities leave something to be desired.  There is no vibration reduction, resulting in shaky video.  And the audio is stereo but it isn't the best.  If you thrive on videos and will want to edit them in a serious tool like Final Cut Pro, you'll want a real camcorder. Major Pros: Lightweight, HD picture, uses AA batteries Major Cons: No lenscap (you can scratch it easily), no optical zoom, low-light performance and no stabilization. Did we mention the price point?  $199.  So, for that price it isn't all that bad a deal. Why it's essential: The low price, small footprint and quality images is more than good enough for a majority of users.  My justification: it's so easy to use and so small to carry, you'll shoot more than you ever did before.  What's better: no video with a great camcorder or video in more-than-passable High Def? http://www.theflip.com
